Municipal Association

Newly Elected Officials Training

 Dear Municipal Elected Official:

Congratulations on your newly elected municipal seat! Now that you are moving from campaigning to policy-making one of the most valuable resources for you as a newly elected municipal official is the South Carolina Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government training offered through the Municipal Association of SC. Each of the 270 cities across the state is represented by the Association.

To learn more about the Municipal Association ask your Municipal Administrator or go to www.masc.sc.

The Association offers specialized training through the MEO Institute for elected officials to increase their understanding of local government operations so that they can effectively run their municipality. Elected officials can graduate from the MEO Institute within one year. To graduate from the MEO Institute, elected officials must complete seven required courses. The Institute’s required courses consist of two day-long sessions held each February in Columbia the day prior to the Hometown Legislative Action Day and five additional classes which may be taken online through the Association’s website or by attending three training sessions held at the ten regional councils of governments locations throughout the year.

Online or on-demand Training: Courses are available online 24/7 and may be taken when it is most convenient for you.  All on-demand courses must be paid online with a credit card, and all correspondence for the on-demand courses are communicated through email.  Individuals taking the course(s) must have a valid email address on their Association profile.  All instructions for beginning the course are sent by emai.  To update your Association profile with your preferred email address contact your Town Clerk.

COG Training: Attending the training at one of the ten regiional Councils of Governments locations offers officials the opportunity to interact and network with other municipal elected officials from the area.  The training is held during the day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and lunch is provided.
