About Us

Welcome to McBee, South Carolina, a small town with a rich history.

McBee was named for V. E. "Bunch" McBee who was a leading force in South Carolina in the building of railroads.  He was instrumental in the building of the Seaboard Airline Railroad Columbia-to-Cheraw line, which ran through McBee.  The railroad was completed in 1900, with the Railroad Depot being built in McBee.

With the establishment of the Seaboard Airline Railroad in 1900, McBee grew rapidly.  Agriculture production increased, land was auctioned for settlement and the Town began to grow to the point that a second Depot was built in 1914. McBee now served passengers and freight with the railroad. The Depot was closed in 1971 after providing 70 years of service.  The Depot is now home for the McBee Depot Library and Railroad Museum.

Encompassing approximately two square miles, located at the southwestern corner of Chesterfield County in the Sandhills region of South Carolina, McBee is surrounded by farmland and the Carolina Sandhills National Refuge.  With US Route 1 and SC Hwy 151 intersecting through the center of Town, McBee experiences a high volume of daily traffic.

Home for approximately 864 citizens, McBee offers both an elementary school and high school, both noted for their excellence in education, tennis courts, a 40 Acre Recreation Complex that currently offers baseball / softball fields, football / scoccer field, a 1.1 mile asphalt walking track, and a track and field area; with more to come in the future.

McBee benefits from the small town atmosphere while offering many elements that larger towns enjoy.
